A Stone Garden Wall

STONE GARDEN WALLS Copings of cut stone, rough slabs, or marble can be appropriately introduced as well as the usual brick copings. In the vicinity of Philadelphia and in Virginia, where brick was a common material in the early days, there are walls in which odd-shaped, molded brick are used as copings. These are laid at an angle imitating the tile-capped stucco walls of the south of Europe. Insets of stone, glazed tile, openings filled with delicate wrought-iron grilles, and similar variants are not only permissible but often desirable. By their use the enclosing wall becomes, while still retaining its utilitarian character, a thing of interest in itself and a valuable part of the garden picture.
